it's a felted moebius basket, one of the first projects in cat bordhi's "second treasury of magical knitting." the moebius thing is a trip. follow the edge of the handle and rim and you will find one continuous line. i'm loving it! i want to make a felted fuzzy moebius basket for boo's "knitting basket."
it's made out of 100purewool, which i originally got from a coop to make wool longies for boo. but, i found out that it pills a lot (it's so soft partly because it has very little twist), which is no good for toddlers on the move. it felts nicely ... sort of. it's definitely not as vibrant as the original yarn, which is a bummer. so to add a little punch i crocheted a flower from my new nicky epstein book ("crocheted flowers," the title says it all) and sewed it on with a little cloisonne bead.
speaking of beads, i just bought a ton of sheep/knitting theme beads from shipwreck beads in washington. they had the best prices and variety of knitting theme beads from my brief perusal of google results. next project: stitch markers. i have visions of me selling them at my lys ... uhuh, not going to happen. first i have to make some for all my knitting buds to test them out! (not to mention finish all the other projects on my plate)
one project that's been taking up a lot of time over the last few months, and almost every waking boo-free moment in the last month, is a scrapbook i made for my brother's 40th birthday. i solicited letters from his closest friends over the years. he's the best brother in the world, a truly humble gentleman, and i wanted to show him that we all appreciate his awesomeness. on the cover i put a picture of him at about 5-6years old next to one taken at my wedding 7 years ago.
another thing i'm working on is a chemo hat out of the yummiest yarn, an 80% bamboo 20%merino blend. i got it at stitches midwest for a bargain, because the company is apparently going to contract with a different dye-er. i'm a little hesitant about using anything with wool for a chemo hat, but it's just the softest yarn ever i couldn't resist. and such a lovely mellow color, too.
i am gravely dissatisfied with a sari silk table runner that i have been working on. i was super excited when i found that it really is quite knittable on my large square needles. it's a very stiff yarn so it's no fun to crochet with or even use normal round needles on. but something about the square ones just make it much easier to get the stitches or something.
first, i find out that i don't really have enough yarn for a long runner. well, maybe the recipient has a short table. then, i find out (after i finish) that the two balls of yarn that i had appear to have been spun/recycled out of differenet saris. argh! they're not only a slightly different color, they're a slightly different texture. i showed it to my knitting group and they thought it was fine since the yarn is intrinsically variegated in texture and color. but i just don't know if it's nice enough for a wedding gift.
