first weaving projects

finished the first dishcloths!

made from knitpicks cotlin and some scraps of leftover cotton blends that were in my stash. they await washing; i'm not sure whether the hemstitch will hold up. maybe i should zigzag stitch them first in the sewing machine.

and another project finished! margaret has a book that recommends breaking up the process of weaving into several steps, using about 10-20 minutes every day. monday, you plan your project. tuesday and wednesday, you warp (or string your loom). thursday you start the scrap rows and then wind your shuttle with yarn. then by the weekend you're ready to weave!

this time i tried wool, which is stretchier and therefore more challenging to warp with even tension. i should have had DH help me hold tension when i was winding up the excess; i definitely had issues. but this first project i'm going to make into felted pouches, so it shouldn't make much difference.

once i started weaving, i was done in a couple of hours! 2 13" long pieces. my pickup stick arrived today and so i was able to start practicing some funky patterns - and became absolutely enchanted with the way the different patterns highlight the yarns. i already love the way that the intertwined colors mix and modulate each other in a regular weave, but the details make it so much more interesting. the methods of doing this on the rigid heddle loom are surprisingly satisfying in a mathematical, physical, and artistic sense.

this is definitely a stashbusting project. warped with 2 colors of lamb's pride that my MIL didn't like knitting with; a great way to use yarn that i'm sure i wouldn't like knitting with either!
the red yarn was one of my first wool purchases; i used it to start some crochet longies for boo back when he was in cloth diapers, but i stopped it because i didn't like it (not soft enough). so i frogged it today and used it for this, and the kinks were not an issue at all.
