summer of socks

my first pair of socks!

go ahead, laugh! i know that one on your right is quite misshapen. it's kinda cute like that i think :) it's way too big (the cuff will fit me, for crying out loud - these are supposed to be for a 3 year old) for starters. i also was trying to convert this pattern to a 2-circular needle pattern, not a good thing to try on my very first sock, and i think i missed a gusset.

while i was in virginia i finished a more respectable second pair for boo.

needle size: 1 (eek! never thought i'd be doing that)
yarn: mini mochi from crystal palace (yummy colors - thanks kate for telling me about this yarn!)

they fit just perfectly right now. funny, when i made them i thought i calculated in an extra half inch of foot length, which usually translates to an inch for my loose knitting (i never get gauge). i even tried them on him several times throughout the process (with bribes - now he tries on my knitwear and trumpets "i get an M&M now!"). so either his feet grew in the month it took me to make them (likely) or my knitting is off (probably more likely).

i was inspired to start these socks in part by a couple of the ladies in my knitting group who are often knitting socks, and in part by my local LYS's "summer of socks" challenge. a good marketing move, i suspect, as it gets folks to knit during what are probably the slow summer months. anyways, the challenge is to knit a pair of socks in june, july, and august. i'm not even entirely sure what the payoff is (other than 3 fabulous pairs of socks) but it's kind of fun. previously i avowed never to take up socks. me knit on those tiny tiny needles? but now i see the addiction. you can do any pattern in the small area that it takes for a sock, and the geometry of the heel/foot is kind of captivating.
