the night before my birthday i thought to myself, gosh, maybe i should do something special for my birthday. i wanted to hang out with boo, and so i decided that the best thing i could do for myself was have a day filled with things that boo would love to do, so that i would not be corralling a three year old to places he didn't really want to go (not fun), and i would get to see his smile; and, if i were lucky, perhaps see his brimming-with-excitement jumps-for-joy.
i had to run up to wisconsin for an errand anyway so we stopped briefly to see where daddy works (showed him his first brain mri) then went to the beach! it's kind of a dirty beach, though, with lots of little rocks and even some burs, as his little foot discovered. it was also the chilliest august day i've ever had; even with jackets, he still wanted to curl up in my lap. treasure these moments.
we then rode the trolley around the downtown area, which he absolutely loved. he started jumping with excitement to see it approach! it was all worth it then. we also checked out a tiny dinosaur museum - small, but probably about the right size for his attention span just before nap.
he fell asleep almost immediately in the car so i just kept going south and drove to my brother's house to arrive early for dinner. my dad drove up from nebraska and we had a lovely meal of korean ribs and scallops (served on a bed of ginger&garlic-sauteed pea tips) grilled by my brother. delicious! i made a cake for my nephew's birthday (we share the same birthday) - trader joe's vanilla cake mix (my favorite) and made a whipped cream frosting with sliced strawberries on top. he said, "aunt m, you can make trader joes box mix cake whenever you want."
